Barking MDU

Internal Refurbishment of Toilets and Showers

Overview

EWG was commissioned to deliver a full refurbishment of washroom and shower facilities at Barking Maintenance Delivery Unit (MDU). The works aimed to modernise outdated amenities and improve staff welfare through durable finishes, enhanced lighting, and additional capacity.

The Objective

Modernise and expand the existing facilities by upgrading fittings, finishes, and systems — improving durability, hygiene, and energy efficiency.

Challenges

  • Occupied Environment

Works were carried out in a live depot, requiring careful coordination to avoid disruption to daily operations.

  • Compact Working Area

Restricted internal access meant strip-out and installation had to be phased precisely to maintain workflow and safety.

Our Solution

  • Full Strip-Out

Removal of all existing WC cubicles, urinals, sinks, showers, and fittings.

  • Sanitary Upgrades

Installation of new WC cubicles, urinals, sinks, and an additional shower to increase capacity.

  • Surface Finishes

Walls clad with modern, fire-rated multipanel systems; full internal redecoration completed throughout.

  • Lighting & Ventilation

New PIR-controlled LED lighting, extract fans, emergency lighting, and hand dryers installed for efficiency and compliance.

Results

  • Modern Facilities Delivered

Upgraded space with durable materials designed for high daily usage.

  • Improved User Experience

More hygienic, better lit, and better ventilated, improving conditions for all users.

  • Energy Efficient Systems

Automated lighting and ventilation reduce long-term running costs and environmental impact.
