Hope Square “Mushroom” Lighting Upgrade

Overview

At the heart of one of London’s busiest transport hubs, the Mushroom lights at Hope Square serve both functional and artistic purposes. EWG was commissioned to upgrade the high-level LED colour-changing fixtures, bringing new life to this iconic installation through modern, energy-efficient systems.

The Objective

Replace and upgrade the ageing LED units with enhanced fixtures — delivering improved reliability, sharper visual impact, and minimal disruption to public flow in this high-footfall zone.

Challenges

  • Height & Access

Fixtures mounted at height required specialist MEWPs and precise safety controls to complete the works efficiently.

  • Public Safety in a Live Environment

The square remained open throughout the works, so we scheduled operations outside peak hours with full site safety management in place.

Our Solution

  • Pre-Planning & Access Strategy

Our team conducted a detailed pre-site assessment covering logistics, lighting specs, and access route planning.

  • Installation Execution

We removed the original units and installed new synchronised LED systems using elevated platforms, all managed under strict site protocols.

  • Testing & Commissioning

Post-installation, we tested every fixture for colour accuracy, synchronisation, and control connectivity to ensure seamless lighting performance across the site.

Results

  • Visual Impact

The upgraded system delivers richer, more dynamic colour transitions — elevating the nighttime experience of Hope Square.

  • Improved Reliability

New LED units reduce energy use and long-term maintenance, improving operational performance.

  • Public Reaction

The renewed installation enhances the square’s identity, drawing attention from commuters and visitors while preserving its signature look.
